About the service
What is Camp Snipe? #
Camp Snipe is an availability-monitoring service for campgrounds. When a campground you want is fully booked, you set a watch and Camp Snipe checks the booking platform continuously. The moment a cancellation frees up a site that matches your criteria, we send you a notification so you can be first to book it.
Is Camp Snipe free? #
Yes, completely free for members. There is no subscription, no per-alert charge, and no premium tier. Camp Snipe is invite only; once you're approved you're in for good, and you can set watches and receive notifications at no cost.
Why is there an approval step? Can anyone sign up? #
Camp Snipe is invite only, and we like it that way. Every new account is reviewed and approved by a real person, typically within a day or two. Keeping the circle small isn't just for show: it keeps us within responsible usage limits on the platforms we watch, and keeps the tool fast and reliable for the campers who are already in.
Platforms
Which booking platforms do you watch? #
We monitor a growing set of platforms: Recreation.gov (federal campgrounds nationwide), ReserveCalifornia (California State Parks), ReserveAmerica (Utah State Parks, including Wasatch Mountain and Antelope Island), Itinio (Lake Casitas and Ventura County Parks like Rincon Parkway, Hobson Beach, and Faria Beach), plus a range of other state parks (Arizona, Florida, Ohio, Washington, Oregon Metro, and others) and Canadian parks. The Camp Sources menu and the live status board on the homepage always show the full, current list, and each source has its own page with that platform’s booking-window rules and insider tips.
Are you affiliated with Recreation.gov, ReserveCalifornia, or any booking platform? #
No. Camp Snipe is an independent monitoring service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Recreation.gov, ReserveCalifornia, Ventura County Parks, or any other booking platform. We check publicly available availability data, the same data your browser loads when you view a campground calendar.
How do I request a new campground or platform? #
Use the contact page to nominate a campground or booking platform. Include the platform name, the campground name and URL, and the date ranges you care about. We prioritize requests with clear demand and platforms that have stable, accessible availability data.
How monitoring works
Is what Camp Snipe does allowed? Does it scrape or automate bookings? #
Camp Snipe only checks publicly available booking availability endpoints, the same data your browser fetches when you view a campground calendar. We respect each platform's rate limits, apply deliberate delays between requests, and do not automate any booking actions. We never log in on your behalf, never hold a reservation, and never complete a transaction. The actual booking is always done by you, manually, on the platform's own website.
How fast are notifications? Will the site still be available when I get pinged? #
Notifications are sent within seconds of a cancellation being detected. However, popular sites can rebook in under a minute, so speed matters. Camp Snipe notifications are best-effort. We fire them as fast as our monitoring cycle allows, but we cannot guarantee the site will still be available by the time you visit the booking page. Having the booking page open on your phone before the alert arrives gives you the best chance.
Do you book the site for me? #
No. Camp Snipe monitors availability and sends alerts, nothing more. You always complete the reservation yourself on the booking platform's own website. We never touch your account credentials, payment information, or reservations. We are a monitoring tool, not a booking agent.
Setting up a watch
Can I watch flexible date ranges, not just one specific night? #
Yes. When setting a watch you can specify a date window (for example, any Friday to Sunday between July 4 and July 31). Camp Snipe will notify you whenever any night within that window opens up at your chosen campground, so you can pick the best available option rather than waiting for one exact date.
Can I monitor specific site types like RV, tent, ADA, or group? #
Yes. When you set a watch you can pick the site types you care about (tent, RV with or without hookups, group, ADA), and we only alert you when a matching site opens. Leave them unchecked to be alerted for any available site.
How many watches can I set at once? #
During the current early-access period, each account can maintain up to 20 active watches simultaneously. You can pause, edit, or delete a watch at any time from your dashboard, and immediately replace it with a new one.
Notifications
Which notification methods are available? #
Camp Snipe supports Telegram (free, instant phone alerts), Pushover (push notifications, small one-time app fee), email, and an in-site notification bell. Telegram and Pushover deliver in near real-time, far faster than email. Telegram is free with no app purchase, so it's the easiest fast option. Note: Pushover and Telegram only appear in your Settings once the Camp Snipe team has enabled that channel for the site. If you don't see one, it isn't available yet, and email plus the in-site bell always are.
How do I set up free Telegram alerts? #
Telegram alerts are free, no app purchase.
- Install Telegram on your phone (App Store or Google Play) if you don't have it.
- Open a chat with @userinfobot and it replies with your numeric chat ID.
- In Camp Snipe go to Settings, paste that chat ID into the Telegram field, turn the Telegram toggle on, and Save.
- Click Send test Telegram to confirm it works.
If you don't see Telegram in your Settings, the team hasn't enabled it on the site yet.
Do I need a Pushover account? #
Pushover is optional but strongly recommended for the fastest phone alerts. You can sign up at pushover.net (one-time fee, about $5). Enter your Pushover user key in your Camp Snipe settings. Email notifications are always available even if you don't use Pushover.
How do I set up Pushover, step by step? #
- Create a free account at pushover.net.
- Install the Pushover app on your phone (App Store or Google Play) and sign in. The app has a one-time purchase of about 5 dollars after a short trial.
- Find your User Key (a 30-character code starting with "u") and copy it.
- In Camp Snipe, go to Settings, paste the key into the Pushover user key field, turn the Pushover toggle on, and Save.
- Click Send test push on the Settings page to confirm it works.
Can I test my notifications before relying on them? #
Yes. On your Settings page there are Send test email and Send test push buttons. Each sends a sample notification to yourself using your current settings, so you can confirm alerts arrive before a real cancellation comes through.
Privacy & data
Is my personal information sold to third parties? #
No. Camp Snipe does not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes. Your data is used solely to operate the service and deliver notifications. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does Camp Snipe work well on mobile? #
Yes. The Camp Snipe dashboard is fully responsive and designed to work on any screen size. For the fastest possible booking after an alert, we recommend keeping the campground's booking page bookmarked on your phone.
How do I delete my account or request a copy of my data? #
You can request deletion or a copy of your personal data at any time via our contact page. Mention your request in the message and we will respond within 45 days. California residents have additional rights under the CCPA/CPRA; see our Privacy Policy.
